How to Play Marbles

1. Marble game set up.

Find a flat area to lay out the marbles. You can play indoors or outdoors, but marbles will not roll well on thick carpet or grass. Indoors, try a flat rug or blanket. Outside, play on the sidewalk or sand.

Mark a small circle, about 3 feet in diameter, with chalk or tape. Place all the marbles randomly within the circle.

2. Choose your shooter marble.

Each player chooses a marble as their shooter. This is usually a larger marble than the ones you’ve put in the circle. If you don’t have a larger one, choose one that looks different.

3. Take turns collecting marbles.

Players sit on the ground and take turns shooting their large marble toward the ones in the circle. The goal is to knock as many as possible outside the circle.

On your turn, make your hand into a fist with your thumb tucked in. Place the marble on your thumb and flick it. Your hand must be touching the ground and your first shot must be from outside the circle.

Collect any marbles that were knocked outside of the circle. Don’t forget your shooter too. If you didn’t knock any marbles out, leave the shooter where it is and shoot from their on your next turn.

Take turns shooting and collecting marbles until all the of the marbles are divided up.

4. How to win at marbles.

Each marble is worth one point. Whoever has the most marbles wins.

Once you’ve got the hang of how to play games with marbles, you can add more rules. A few ideas to get you started:

  • Start with a bigger circle, up to 10 feet. This makes knocking them out more challenging.
  • If you knock marbles out on your turn, you get a second turn.
  • Knocking your opponent’s shooter outside the circle is an automatic win.

One popular way to play is for 2 people to have their own separate sets of marbles. Each player should use marbles of a single color so you can tell who they belong to. You may play to keep the marbles afterward or return them to their original owner.
