Sun catchers are a great craft to make on a rainy day, then hang up to shine when the sun comes back out. To make this star sun catcher craft, you’ll need tissue paper and glue. We didn’t use contact paper for this project, but you can.
The Earth’s sun is actually a yellow dwarf star, so it seems fitting that these stars are lit by the sun! This makes a fun themed activity to do while learning about space.
Sun catcher craft tips
- We used wax paper to make this star sun catcher. Alternatively, you can use clear contact paper or tape.
- Use plenty of glue. Getting the tissue paper good and wet will help it stick together. Just be sure the glue dries completely before moving to the next step. It may take around an hour or more, depending on how much glue you use.
- We used all yellow tissue paper, but you can make these in any color! Use several different colors together for a stained-glass effect.

Instructions
1. Cut tissue paper pieces.
Start by cutting or tearing the tissue paper into several small pieces. You can make more as you go, but it helps to have a big pile to start.
2. Glue tissue paper together.
Brush a layer of glue onto the wax paper. Stick pieces of tissue paper to the glue. Add more glue and tissue paper as needed until the area is covered. Make sure the pieces overlap and there are no gaps. Brush a final layer of glue over the top, then let it dry completely.
3. Attach the star outline.
Draw or trace a star onto the craft paper. Cut out around the outside and the inside, creating a star-shaped frame. Glue the star to the tissue paper. Repeat with as many stars as will fit on the rectangle of wax paper. Let the glue dry, then cut around the outside of each star.
To display the star sun catchers, punch a hole in the tip of the star. Thread it with yarn and hang it in a sunny window. You can hang them individually or make a garland with several star sun catchers!
