Earth’s moon is our closest neighbor in space. We can watch the phases change and see it in the sky most nights – and sometimes during the day.
The moon is a great inspiration for an art project, so we thought it would be a great subject for a collage. Collage art is simple; glue scraps and bits of paper to a surface.
You can use almost anything to make this collage art. Make it realistic in shades of blue and gray with darker areas. Or have fun and make it look however you like.
Collage art tips
- The great thing about making a collage is that there’s no way to do it wrong. Use whatever paper you have on hand. Every moon collage will turn out unique!
- Use plenty of glue. It’s okay if the paper gets a bit damp because it will stay together better. Just be sure to let it dry completely when you’re done.
- Classic school glue is fine for this project and it’s what we used. If you’re crafting with older kids, Mod Podge is a great adhesive and sealer too.

How to make a moon collage
Supplies

Instructions
1. Cut scrap paper into small pieces.
Start by gathering scrap paper. This can be leftover pieces of craft paper, card stock, scrapbook paper, or anything from other projects. For collage, you can also use cutouts from magazines, newspapers, or even packaging.
Cut out shapes and patterns that look interesting. Make them large or small. The more variety, the more interesting your moon collage will be.

2. Draw a circle.
Freehand or trace a round object to draw a large circle on the black paper using the white crayon. It should be large, but not fill the page.

3. Glue paper to the circle.
Glue the pieces of scrap paper onto the circle. Trim the scraps to different sizes as you go, filling in or overlapping. The outside edge should fit within the circle. Earth’s moon has light and dark sections, so you can use a photo for reference or just have fun with it!

Once you’re happy with the collage moon, brush a final layer of glue over the top to seal the whole thing. Let the glue dry completely. If you’d like, you can draw stars or other objects in the background.
