This twig star craft is simple, but makes a fun STEAM activity for kids of all ages! Collect sticks from nature and tie them into a five-pointed star while you talk about nature, space, or even geometry.
Kids will quickly notice that the way you layer the twigs will affect how well it holds its shape when tied. In the photos, our twig star with the blue yarn is snug, while the one with the yellow is a bit loose.
It’s helpful to find twigs that are about the same thickness and relatively straight. Cut or break them to be close in length, and trim any knots or forked branches. We used pruning shears for our and for safety, this is a task best done by an adult (or teen).
There’s no need to wash the twigs, but brush them free of any dirt and loose bark.

How to make a twig star
Supplies
- collected twigs
- cotton yarn
- scissors
- ruler, optional

Instructions
1. Choose and trim twigs.
Start by picking 5 twigs that are about the same size. They don’t have to be exact. You may want to do a practice layout to make sure the finished star will be balanced.

2. Plan shape.
Next, lay out the twigs so that they overlap. They’ll be tied at each point, so they need to touch with a bit of tension, but not so much that the twig might break.

3. Tie the points.
Cut 5 pieces of yarn about 6 inches long. Choose one of the points and wrap the yarn around both twigs a few times, then tie a knot.

Continue around the star, tying each of the points. When you’re happy with the shape, tie each yarn in a second knot to secure it. You can leave the yarn tails loose or trim them.

These twig stars are pretty quick to make and each one needs only a few twigs and yarn. Make a whole constellation, tie them to a mobile, or use them to decorate!
